The Federal Motor Transport Authority was established by law on August 4, 1951, as the supreme federal authority for road traffic. It is part of the portfolio of the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure and sees itself as a service provider for all matters relating to motor vehicles and their users. Since 2020, it has been headed by its president, Richard Damm. Through its work, it makes an important contribution to increasing road safety in Germany and Europe.
